Myrmecocystus mexicanus aka Giant honeypot or Mexican honeypot, the biggest species of honeypot in North America. There are different varities of M mexicanus across the desert of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas. This species is very successful at surviving the harsh desert environment. It also become so adapted to its habitat that it develop different varities to further adapt to its local ecosystem. Some have different colors including their workers. In this page we will show you some of the varities of Mexicanus plus the different colors of workers that each varities has.
Red Giants have bigger red bars on the gaster
Super Yellow are usually solid yellow color on their gaster lacking any patterns
When the yellow band on the gaster are equal or bigger than the red bad
Very Rare morph of M mexicanus where the whole top of the gaster is red
Single Band have usually one line or faded line on the gaster
Paradox is where the pattern is either reticulated or random stripes in the gaster
Yellow worker variety are docile in nature. They are the most widely spread variety out of the four. They are more beautiful in my opinion especially when the colony is big. They are very satisfying to observe.
Red worker variety are shy in nature. They will all hide when startled. a little bit harder to find than the yellow variety. They make the biggest replete out of the four.
Orange worker variety are the most aggresive and active out of all the four varities I have encounter. The second hardest to find because the place where they are found only has a small population density. The terrain is also very rocky which makes them hard to collect.
Similar in behavior with the yellow worker vairety. This are the hardest to find because of the small population density and it never rain enough in their area to trigger a nuptial flight.
